I do my best to try to get students to have some sort of hands-on experience in classes. In my political sociology class, there is often a unit on elections. In this unit students will come up with a fake political party and the readings and discussion is framed around how to work as consultants/strategists to get their candidates elected. For extra credit, students are then able to go out and film/edit their own ads for the party.
